Piracy: getting a game for free without paying the ones who made the game for it. Buying Used: paying a third party for a game without paying the ones who made the game.
Which is worse?

That's a hard one to answer, paying for a used one you actualy lose money for buying it off someone, but downloading it's for free, so i'd pick buying a used one is worse for me

11 copies of game are made 10 people buy game A week later said 10 people sell the game 12 people want to buy the game 10 of the 12 buy it used 1 of the 12 buy it new The remaining person pirates the game because none are available or 12 copies of game are made 11 are bought 11 are sold later as used games 5 people buy the used copy 60 people pirate it Alternatively No one pirates it Still only 11 total copies are sold new As of late; "Piracy" is an excuse for a game doing shitty. Games these days do shitty because they only sell you half the game for $60, then expect you to pay another $30 for DLC to finish the game. Or add stupid DRM to "prevent piracy." Which is the king of irony. They're killing themselves. I've pirated games I wouldn't have otherwise played because I'm so fearful of being let down. Most games have either really shitty gameplay or half the fucking game on DLC. So why would I go buy Fallout: New Vegas for $80 just to have to pay another $30 for the level cap to be raised? (on the xbox360 version). Hell, not even that, I have to buy the DLC to be able to play past the end of the main mission! What kind of bullshit is that? I could just pirate the game and not spend $80+ on something that's going to be potentially shitty. inb4 entitled pirates We're customers who don't feel we're getting what we paid for. Hidden fees (SURPRISE HALF THE GAME IS ON $30 DLC) is bullshit. Gamestop/GAME/EB Games is being paid multiple times for the same game. Albeit not at once. Someone has to bring the game back before it can be sold again, but a game transferring through many hands all using Gamestop/GAME/EB Games as a middleman means Gamestop/GAME/EB Games is being paid multiple times for the same game. Gamestop/GAME/EB Games sells COD for $90. Gamestop buys COD back for $40. Gamestop/GAME/EB Games sells it back for $80. That's $40 profit right there. Then it's bought back for $30, sold back again for $70. The cycle continues, just with the price bought back and the price sold back fluctuating constantly. - Listen to music online? You're contributing to the fall the the music industry
- Read manga/doujin online? You're hurting some poor independent Japanese artist
- Watch porn online? you're hurting the Porn industry
- Watch gameplay and story footage of a game online? You're hurting the gamer magazine industry
- Download a Playstation emulator to play homebrew games? You're pirating the console
- Throw recyclable items in the trash? You're contributing to pollution
- Drink free water instead of bottled water? You're killing the bottled water industry
- Grow your own food in your back yard? You're hurting the stores in your area
- Masturbate? You're hurting the sex trade industry
Also, Publishers have certainly forgotten the art of creating a good manual, I mean I looked at BLOPS manual before I ripped the page from it, it was like 3 pages long (2.5 after I removed the key =P).

i totally agree with what your saying there, i am very very paranoid these days to purchase a game, i'd rather torrent it first and if it's any good i'll buy it.
In my opinion ever since the gaming industry has become the new market, all developers are looking to make the quick buck and don't put any effort into their games, there are very few that are good.

Thats the EXACT reason why there are ALOT less demo's or free to play Beta's. Seems currently only way to get access to play the game before it is released is to pre-purchase the game THEN get access to the Beta, after you have already paid them. It seems lately they know they are making shit and they are trying to stop people knowing it shit until they buy it.

I'm gonna say yeah, and nah. I listen to music online, and if i like the band enough, i go hunting for their albums. I have roughly $1000 or so in CDs, and i'm trying through JB Hi-Fi to get some CDs/EPs from some obscure bands i'm sure you've never heard of nor would like. So i guess i balance out. I contribute to both sides of the issue

I'm killing the bottled water industry. Hurrrrrrrr.
Also, now that you put second-hand game sales like that, I'm pretty happy to use Steam and let the game stores rot. Though I'm sure there's still ways in which Steam cheats developers out of their profits somehow...

Pirate mediocre games. Buy good games. If everyone did this there would be more incentive to make good games and not more Call of Rehash 69: Master Chief's Adventure 2: Electric Boogaloo: Extended Edition. I'm gonna say yeah, and nah. Pirate mediocre games. Buy good games. What about indie games? If everyone pirated them those companies would most certainly go out business as they don't have the endless budgets like the other big companies to make up for the loss in profit. Also sure "Call of Rehash 69: Master Chief's Adventure and 2: Electric Boogaloo: Extended Edition." sound like terrible games (I love your creativity in naming them ) they would appeal to a certain type of audience and without people buying it that audience will never get more games produced by that same company that appeals to them. If everyone pirated all "mediocre" games there would be less incentive for awesome games like audiosurf and VVVVVV to be produced. (sorry about my terrible sentence structure and arguing skills the holidays weren't kind )

some things are not worth buying when you can get it for free. Downloading a game to see how it plays before buying for online play, is how it works these days....... i know i had a pirated version of counterstrike source before i bought it for online play. As for music and movies, that's real piracy because of the copy right protection. TV shows that are on TV now can be said to be able to watch online, but if you don't want to wait because its on a free to air channel. Manga is also copy righted UNLESS the author wants it spread out. As for porn...... well each site has stuff from other site and yet there are a few free sites out there that are free, so there's no problem there. not my fault your missus doesn't do a lot of those positions :/ if you really break it down there really isn't much to the piracy. As for water there is a quota for free water and there are drinking taps all over the place..... why buy when its free? But that saying goes only for a few items. i agree with candlejack and that goes for a few "piracy" things (as above and below). tv shows are ok so long and they are on tv at the current time. since most games are played online they need to be registered to be able to unlock the full game to play. I have had a number of pirated games that i have played and i have ended up buying them on steam so i do have to keep installing or take my cd everywhere i got just so i can play it. I wouldn't be playing many games if i didn't download them to see the how the game plays. so in conclusion it's not piracy if you end up buying it xD.

The whole buying from third party thing seems to be less illegal in a sense. I mean in EB games you can sell your games so they can resell it as second hand. The developers aren't getting money for it. so yeah... im not gonna lie,,, I torrent alot of stuff

Then again you could pirate games to try them out before you buy them, if they diddnt have a demo of cource. I had actually pirated killing floor before I bought it and it turned out to be epic so I bought it plus all the DLC. If I haddnt of pirated it in the first place I might never have found killing floor at all.
