I was conversing with a few random people in this chat room where I was called an asshole for my opinions. I want to know what you believe.

They were talking about how America dropped the bomb on Japan during the war and my response was thus:

"War isn't completely futile. Even though millions of people were killed in the bombing, it was the right thing to do. Know why? Because Japan was slaughtering millions of people, and they would have continued slaughtering, so while the bomb killed millions, it killed less than what Japan had done throughout the war and would have killed if they had won. Thus it is justified"

Don't get me wrong, I don't believe any death is a good death. What I want to know is, what do you believe or have to say on the subject?

Well, actually, you need a little history lesson....and so does the people you were talking to

Japan, when America dropped the bomb, was not slaughtering particularly well...due to the fact that at that point in the war, their navy had been crushed, and America had pushed them into a corner. America, however, expected Japan to surrender when they had 'em cornered, and that the war would end bloodlessly. But Japan, energized by social tension, could not surrender, really. So America had to act fast to find SOME way to end it all. Before the bomb was dropped, there was a plan in place: a planned invasion of the Japanese home islands. It was either that, or back off from Japan and witness the horrors of the Pacific front again.

The invasion of Japan, had it occured, would have been a true tragedy. Not only would America have suffered horrendous losses, but the Japanese civilians, caught in total war and taught to die for their nation. The projected casualties on the Japanese side alone far outweighed the deaths caused by the bomb. Not to mention the deaths caused by firebombs, and the American casualties. So, really, the bombs were a way of puffing up big and in doing so allowing Japan and America a way out of what would have been a bloody fight to the death.

Seriously, if these people wanted to discredit America, they need to learn their history, as they are choosing bad examples. In fact, the avante garde 'Hate America' sentiment uses really baseless reasons quite often (despite the fact that reasons exist that ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE, like the native american massacres, the Phillipines War, and other such minor "incidents")

I hope that helps you with that; and be sure to remind those idiotas that history and politics are often extremely multi-layered and complex, so it choosing "good" and "evil" usually just proves how daft you are. ;D

EDIT: it is also worth a note that while this is what I found from my investigations into the matter, there is almost certainly even MORE to it, on all sides. Just goes to show that nothing is so simple in history,
